How to Humanely Remove a Snake

Learn how to safely remove a snake without anyone (snake or human) getting hurt.

By Josh Peterson

Snakes are inherently creepy because they don't have feet. If they had feet, they'd probably seem a lot more cuddly. Or they'd kick people a lot and we'd still be scared of them. In any case, feetless snakes can be quite a pest, especially if they are venomous.

There are ways of removing our slithery friends from basements or yards without getting bit or harming the snake. You can safely restrain the snake, then release it back into the wilderness where it belongs.

Here is how.

  1. Go to the hardware store and purchase several glue traps for catching rats.

  2. Tack or nail these glue traps onto a board. If the snake is large, buy a sufficient amount of glue traps.

  3. Tie a rope to the board.

  4. Place the board against the wall of the basement or against the fence or wherever the snake may dwell. Snakes prefer to slither beside walls. Avoid placing the board next to furniture or pipes. The snake can use those to break free.

  5. Keep pets away from glue board.

  6. When the snake becomes trapped by the glue board, use the rope to transport the captured snake and glue board somewhere else. You may want to use a pole to load the snake into the back of your car.

  7. When you are at the wilderness, pour vegetable oil over the snake. Use a water pistol if you don't want to get near the snake. This will loosen the glue and the snake will be able to break free unharmed.

  8. The snake is now free, and you are now free of the snake.

Check with your local Fish and Game Commission before transporting a live wild animal. You may need a permit.
